In this episode, Naruto convinces Sakura and Sasuke to help
him see what Kakashi looks like under his mask.
First, they treat Kakashi to Ramen, thinking that Kakashi
must take off his mask to eat. However, Team Asuma gets in
the way, and Kakashi finishes before they could see. Next,
they try to follow Kakashi, but they fail as a team and individually.
Then, they try to get Kakashi to eat from a hot-springs, but
he declines. After that, Sasuke gives the idea to get Kakashi
into the hot springs, but Kakashi uses a towel to cover his
face. Last, the three Genin try to take it by force.
In a side story, three ninjas from Kakashi's past come back
to try and kill him, failing each time to do so. In the end,
they are discovered, used as an excuse for Team 7's strange
behavior, and are beaten by Kakashi.
Team 7 then asks Kakashi directly what is under his mask,
but Kakashi only reveals another mask. (The mask is lighter
in color)
Quotes and trivia
So far, this is the only episode where Sasuke is seen somewhat
out of character from time to time; sometimes up to the point
of looking downright ridiculous, such as when Naruto piques
his curiosity about Kakashi's appearance.
The scene between Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura in the alleyway
are repeated three times, just with different dialogue.
This also applies to the Ramen house where Kakashi suspects
that he's going to be punk'd in some fashion.
Kakashi: "Hmm... So Junko said that... 'I'm going to
lose track of you'."
He refers to the voice actress of Naruto, Junko Takeuchi,
who does in fact lose track of Kakashi in the form of Naruto
losing track of him.
When Ayame (the young lady and daughter of Teuchi, the manager)
at Ichiraku Ramen gets all hearty-eyed over Kakashi it's a
bit of slam on the seiyuu, Inoue Kazuhiko, who is known for
playing pretty/handsome boy voices.
The extent of Kakashi's porn addiction is shown in this episode.
He goes crazy at the sight of the books in a bookstore window
(to the extent that he drops the bag of groceries he was carrying)
and is so delighted by a gigantic ad for the new Icha Icha
Paradise movie, Icha Icha Violence, that he immediately runs
off to reserve a ticket.
At several points throughout the episode, a crow flies about
in the background referring to the nature of this episode
"Aho" which translates to stupid. Also, while Sakura
was following Kakashi on her own, Kakashi set up a scarecrow
of himself as a decoy. These are plays on Kakashi's name,
as "Kakashi" can be translated as "Scarecrow".
In addition, the mission the team was sent on in the episode
was to help out at a farm. Kakashi's surname, "Hatake",
can be translated as "farmland".
In the public bath scene, the Kyuubi seal is not found on
Naruto's stomach as well as Orochimaru's cursed "Heaven"
seal on Sasuke's shoulder.
The Moya brothers, who are after Kakashi, have headbands which
depict a symbol that has never been seen before or since.
The symbol on them is for the Hidden Smoke Village.
The audience learns that under Kakashi's mask is another lighter
colored mask.
The main Moya brother bears a similar (although given the
episode/manga release date, likely coincidental) resemblance
to Kingdom Hearts II's Xaldin.
When ANBU, AnimeOne, and Anime-Heaven translated this episode,
they nicknamed it "The Worst Episode Ever."
This is a side-story from the manga. Originally it took place
around the time of the Chuunin exams. In addition, the original
story was only three pages long.
